The metric system was created in France in 1795. Standardized in 1960 and given the name International system of Units, it is now used in most countries and in scientific works. the system is based on 10, like the decimal counting system. The basic unit for basic unit of mass. related units of volume or capacity and the gram is a prefixes and their meanings are: mili-=1/1,000 centi-=1/100 deci-=1/10 deka-=10 hecto-=100 kilo-=1,000 examples: millimeter (mm)= 1/1,000 of a meter kilometer(km)=1,000 meters milligram (mg)=1/1,000 of a gram kilogram (kg)= 1,000 grams |
